Games from the Arabian Peninsula
AL-RHUME
Located on the eastern side of the Arabian Peninsula, Oman is historically a seaport and trading post for sailors from around the world. Oman's landscape consists of beautiful seas and scenic mountains. The Omani people are fascinating in their traditions and cultures. The following game is one example of the simple fun of Omani children.
NUMBER OF PLAYERS:
2 or more
MATERIALS:
Masking tape or rope
Cap for each child
DIRECTIONS:
The person who is “It” must stay behind a line on the floor made from tape or rope. The other players try to get their caps, which are left within reach of It without getting caught by It!
THE HONEST PERSON AND THE THIEF
Yemeni families love playing games. While Dominoes and Backgammon are popular for adults, children enjoy many games including cards, marbles, singing, writing poetry, dance, and traditional games like this one. Boys are often more visible than girls. Girls play close to home.
NUMBER OF PLAYERS:
5 or more
MATERIALS:
Small, cube-shaped box
Black marker
DIRECTIONS:
Before the game starts the teacher must label the box. Label both ends “King.” Label one side “Minister” and one side “Soldier.” Label the top and bottom sides “Thief.”
The players sit in a circle and take turns throwing the box into the center. If the box lands on its end, the thrower becomes King. If it lands on one of the sides the thrower becomes either Minister or Soldier. If the box lands on the top or bottom, the thrower is declared Thief. The Thief receives a sentence that is decided by the Minister, supervised by the Solider, and agreed to by the King. The sentence might consist of doing sit-ups or performing a service. The players should be careful how they sentence because they may become the next Thief!
