Games from the Middle East
EAR AND NOSE
Iranian families have a simple life. Most of them come home for lunch and spend time together in the middle of the day. Both Iranian adults and kids enjoy this game!
NUMBER OF PLAYERS:
4 or more
MATERIALS:
None
DIRECTIONS:
All players sit in a circle. The first person pulls the ear, hair, or nose of the person sitting on the left who does the same to the person to his left. Once this has gone completely around the circle, the first player then chooses a different part of the body to pull. Anyone who laughs is out of the game!
THE JAR GAME
The Bangladeshis live on small parcels of land, in simple homes that are often clustered together. There is a courtyard in the middle of the communities where everyone gathers for recreation and games.
NUMBER OF PLAYERS:
2 or more
MATERIALS:
A wide-mouthed jar, quart sized or larger
5 apricot pits per player
12 apricot pits for the jar
DIRECTIONS:
Put twelve pits in the jar to start the game. Players take turns tossing their pits into the jar from a designated distance. Three to six feet works best, depending on the age of the players. When a player’s pit lands in the jar, he or she wins three pits plus the pit that was tossed. The game ends when the jar is empty. The winner is the one with the most pits.
