Games from Southeast Asia

ONE-LEG JUMP

The different islands of Indonesia introduce a variety of traditional games. Especially popular are cock fighting, bull racing, martial arts, and a game called congkak which is played with pebbles and a wooden board.

But this Indonesian hopscotch game appeals to both boys and girls and will challenge your sense of balance!

NUMBER OF PLAYERS:

2 or more

MATERIALS:

Chalk

DIRECTIONS:

Draw six squares arranged side by side (three rows of 2 each). They should be about one foot by one foot in size.
To play this game, each player has to hop on one leg to the first square, then to the second one, and then to the third one, and so on.
After reaching the sixth square, the player turns around, still on one leg, and hop back from the sixth square to the first one. While hopping, the player must not step on the line between the squares and must keep his balance. If the player’s other foot touches the ground then he loses and must stand on one leg for five minutes.

WHICH WAY DOES THE WIND BLOW?

Malaysians like to get together in large numbers to enjoy festivals and public occasions. It is warm enough all year round for everything to be enjoyed outdoors!

NUMBER OF PLAYERS:

5 or more

MATERIALS NEEDED:

None

DIRECTIONS:

Have all the children sit in a circle except one, who will sit in the middle of the circle. All the children in the circle chant, “Which way does the wind blow?” The child in the middle will answer the question by responding: “Blow to all who have long hair, or who are wearing yellow clothes, etc.” These children will have to get up from their places and find a place to sit elsewhere within the circle. Repeat. Give each child the opportunity to be the one in the center of the circle.
