VARRA
In Albania, children play a form of hopscotch called Varra. It can be quite a challenge because you can make it harder by having the players hop backward, blindfolded, or with hands behind their backs!
NUMBER OF PLAYERS:
1 or more
MATERIALS:
Varra pattern made from masking tape (for carpet) or chalk (for outside)
DIRECTIONS:
Using masking tape, “draw” the Varra pattern on the floor. The pattern should be 9 squares, approximately 12” to 18” each, in three rows of three. Number the squares 1 through 9. Choose two squares to be safe resting squares. These are places where both feet may be put down.
To begin, the first player attempts to hop on one foot from square one to square nine, stopping only with both feet on the safe squares, and without stepping on any lines.
Continue with other players, making it harder by having the children hop backward, blindfolded, or with hands behind their backs!
